Situated at the east of the Pearl River Delta, Macau was governed by Portugal until 1999 when its sovereignty was transferred to China and became a Special Administrative Region and has a high level of autonomy since. As a result, the region is heavily influenced by both cultures and its official languages are Portuguese and Chinese.
