As retail investors who seek higher yield in alternative asset classes are becoming more sophisticated, Caroline Baker, Managing Director, Alternative Investments, Asia talks to Ignites Asia about the trends on retail alternatives funds moving mainstream in Singapore.

She pointed out that historically it was the institutional investors that were able to access alternative investments like private equity and real estate funds. However, retail investors are getting more sophisticated and they are looking for higher returns in alternatives than what they are getting in traditional funds.

Alternatives funds invest in asset classes other than equities, fixed income and cash, including private equity, hedge funds, venture capital and real estate, and interest in such products has been growing steadily from a wider segment of investors.

Caroline added that as alternatives become more mainstream, these asset classes are becoming an increasingly attractive proposition because the returns have historically been very high.
