Recent analysis of the APAC region shows Singapore head and shoulders above other jurisdictions when it comes to investment in Asia, combining strong opportunities with little in the way of friction.

Singapore recorded the lowest friction score in the Vistra Friction Index at 0.32 — well below the APAC benchmark of 0.47 — while maintaining an Opportunity Index of 0.71 that sits comfortably above the regional benchmark of 0.64.

With the lowest friction score of any APAC market and above-benchmark opportunity, Singapore has evolved from a regional hub to the infrastructure that enables private capital to operate across Asia.

This positions Singapore firmly in the Efficient Opportunity Markets quadrant. That makes it a location where investment offers clearly defined rewards with minimal obstacles. It’s easy to see why it’s a popular destination for global capital.

Behind the data, though, there’s a more nuanced story than simply "best place to invest." Singapore's true competitive advantage is institutional, reflecting its position at the core of private capital operations in APAC.

Where Singapore excels

Across all five friction dimensions, Singapore leads or co-leads the region. Regulatory friction is the lowest in APAC (0.26), reflecting clear rules, transparent tax environments, and investor-friendly legal architecture. Professional ecosystem is also the lowest (0.22), with unmatched depth in fund administration, legal, audit, and compliance services.

Corporate governance (0.30) is consistently low across all sub-indicators. The exit environment (0.40) is supported by the S$5bn (USD$3.9bn) Equity Market Development Programme and SGX reforms. Macro risk (0.42) benefits from a credible currency framework and deeper hedging markets.

The opportunity profile

Singapore's opportunity is driven more by execution quality than domestic growth. Its Operating Environment Outlook score of 0.78 (second only to India) ranks it first among VC respondents on that pillar. Its asset management industry reached S$6.07tn in assets under management (AUM) in 2024, with alternatives growing 14%.

Three distinct roles

The Vistra Friction Index identifies Singapore as functioning in three capacities simultaneously. First, as a fund formation and structuring hub — the preferred domicile for regional strategies. Second, as a gateway to Southeast Asia — the base for multi-jurisdiction deployment. Third, as an exit and capital markets platform that benefits from policy reforms and equity market development.

As Lydia Chin, Senior Commercial Manager, Southeast Asia, Vistra Fund Solutions observes: "Singapore's role in APAC private capital has evolved beyond its domestic market size. It is now the region's most trusted operating platform, combining institutional stability, regulatory clarity, and world-class professional services."

Singapore is no longer competing solely as a market, but as the infrastructure that enables private capital to operate across Asia. For any GP running a pan-Asian strategy, it offers an unmatched combination of legal predictability, tax efficiency, professional ecosystem depth, and capital market infrastructure.
