Financial Controller

The Financial Controller role is a key appointment for Jordans. We seek to implement systems, controls and processes that will enable the business to continually improve its efficiency and help it grow.

Working with the Finance Director, the role will have responsibility for all day to day finance matters covering processing, reporting and commercial analysis.  You will be responsible for managing and developing a finance team that can effectively partner the business along with managing the day to day relationships with external advisors.

To succeed in this role you must be able to combine excellent technical skills with a real drive to impact the business and help drive it forward to meet its objectives.  

Key Responsibilities

  • The day to day running of the finance team ensuring accuracy of data and timeliness of reporting, whether the preparation of monthly management accounts or addressing ad-hoc requests
  • To own and enforce the accounting policies of the group.  This will include the definition and documentation of current policies, training where relevant and review to ensure continued compliance
  • The development and production of the monthly management accounts pack & quarterly high-level accounts
  • Monitoring and reporting on performance against divisional KPI's
  • Fixed Assets Register Maintenance and Control
  • Responsibility for ensuring the Firm's compliance with regulatory obligations including but not limited to, the Solicitors Accounts Rules, ICAEW Accounts Rules, HMRC Regulations, VAT Regulations & Returns, and in conjunction with the Finance Director all Risk & Money Laundering regulations.
  • Ownership of the year end process, including production of statutory accounts and management of the external audit 
  • Provision of ad-hoc commercial support to the business to aid and inform the decision-making processes of the business
  • Ownership of the current JBA accounting system (including the business intelligence module) such that you become an expert user of the software and are able to lead any future developments required as the business grows
  • To develop the cash flow management processes such that we accurately predict the weekly and monthly cash flow requirements of the business.  This includes the ownership of the annual budgeting and reforecasting process
  • Oversight and control (with the credit control manager) of aged debts, including ensuring sufficient provisioning are in place

Qualifications and other requirements

  • An accountancy qualification (ACA, CIMA or ACCA) and at least 5 years post qualification experience. Some relevant industry experience would be an advantage
  • Excellent understanding and experience of financial reporting in a commercial setting with the ability to apply technical accounting requirements to real life situations
  • Experience of systems development projects and the ability to manage and contribute to such projects
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to partner with business areas to add value to the decision-making process
  • Detail orientated, proficient at managing projects and able to multi-task, organise, prioritize and structure personal and team workloads
  • An aptitude to learn new skills and continue to develop professionally
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written skills
  • Excellent people skills, which include the ability to manage and lead a team and the ability to influence people across all levels and areas of the business
  • Must be a proven team-player with the ability to work autonomously
  • Highly proficient in using Microsoft Excel and being able to deal with big data
